SYNOPSIS

In a world with no room for exceptions, where the living live in standard-sized homes, and the dead rest in standard-sized graves, an insomniac white-collar worker is perpetually stuck somewhere between waking and sleeping, and cannot stop thinking about his grandfather’s coffin - the one that was too big for the hole - and the hilarity that ensued when he stood his ground with a bureaucracy that just wanted to get things done.

Platform 65’s production is a contemporary adaptation of the classic monologue written in 1984 by the late Kuo Pao Kun, a much-respected playwright, theatre director, arts activist, and Cultural Medallion winner, considered one of the theatre pioneers in Singapore.

Written far ahead of its time, perhaps more relevant than ever today, it pokes fun at the absurdities of bureaucracy, raising questions about the rules we set for ourselves, in life as much as in death, the most important which may well be, “What’s the point?”

This production by Platform 65 is part of the Kuo Pao Kun Festival 2012, organised by The Theatre Practice (实践剧场), one of Singapore’s foremost theatre companies.
